The United Harness Horsemen Association (UHHA) existed for many years when in the period of 1946-48, a Quebec group voted to move its head office from Toronto to Montreal. Then, in the 50s, the UHHA split in two. The Ontario group later became known as the Ontario Harness Horsemen Association (OHHA). The President of the UHHA at that time was Hector Cloutier of Pembrooke, Ontario.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that the UHHA became the Quebec Trotting and Pacing Association (ATAQ), under the presidency of Jean-Paul Charron.

The administration consists of 17 Directors, including the President and four other members of the Executive Committee. These 17 Directors are elected by the members located in four regions, one for each of the major racetracks in Quebec: Hippodrome de Montréal, Hippodrome de Trois-Rivières, Hippodrome de Québec and Hippodrome d’Aylmer. The 17 Directors represent the Owners (9 or 53%), the Drivers and Trainers (6 or 35%). The remaining seats (2 or 12%) are held by Breeders, from anywhere in Quebec.

The Driver, Trainer and Groom members of the association benefit from many services including life insurance and salary insurance while the Owners are protected by sulky insurance. As well, in order to encourage solidarity amongst the members, the association organizes social activities as well as an annual banquet in order to honour our champions.
